i know i want to try making one for sure! i think i'd lay them around a sphere (maybe of chicken wire or something?) and very lightly stitch each one together where they touch. and then use some sort of glue to get it to hold it's shape. it could work. you would just need the right sort of glue to hold it. maybe! not so sure!
i was thinking dip them into a bowl of fabric stiffener and lay them over a huge beach ball (which you've covered in cling wrap) until half the ball is covered. when they're dry tie them together with some thread and then repeat with the other side of the ball? maybe?
